Dad and Matilda sent me an email yesterday. One of my cousin's apparently had a baby. She's not much older than Matilda, which, of course, has turned my dad into a crazy old man, begging my sister not to make him a grandfather just yet. My neighbour, Mrs Russell has been checking up on me every so often. She reminds me of my mom. Mrs Russell and my mom used to sip their coffee out on the porch on Saturday mornings, and now it's me and Mrs. Russell. We talk about mom sometimes, dad other times. She rarely mentions Matilda, though. Says she's sure she's just fine. If she wasn't, she would have heard ALL about it. It's nice to just relax. She asks about Ian too much, "that boy who picks you up for charity."

I don't know. I suppose I just miss my mother a lot today.

I started at Meals on Wheels last week with my dad's car. He and my sister went out of town a couple of nights ago and they're supposed to be gone the whole summer so it's been just me (and the weekly maid). It's sort of nice having the place to myself. I might go and stay with my cousin across town for a couple of weeks. Even though they live in town, I never get to see them. Dad and his brother had a falling out

Anyone doing anything exciting? I was thinking of heading to the swimming pool. I could use a good swim.

I thought the end of the year was supposed to be LESS busy? ;)

Matilda's back from school, and I'm sure that a few of you will know soon enough -- if you were friends of hers. Her birthday's next month, and I know she's throwing a party. I'll be hiding in my room. Some of her Chi O friends are coming up from Baton Rouge.

The last issue of The Apple Creek Chronicle comes out on Monday. Check out the special spread on extracurriculars around ACHS! I'll bet everyone can find SOMETHING they like to show their school spirit!

Elaine and Mary-Anne! I really loved these candles. I got Wedding Day and Save the Rainforests because I am a romantic and an activist, and they smell heavenly. Seriously. You have to keep up your enterprise, because I'll never go to another candle shop again!

I'm working on a bunch of different projects for the newspapers big end of the year issues, and I just wanted to say that I think you'll all enjoy it. Should give us all something to think about for next year's clubs!

.003 - FILTERED PRIVATE [Apr 13, 2008 * 12:12am]
Matilda came home this weekend for spring break. I'm not really sure why she came back here, but dad is threw her a welcome-home party last night, and none of them noticed I wasn't there. She's got some old friends over tonight, so I've been hiding in my room. They're really loud, and I think dad is down there with them. They're playing Halo or some video game, I think. It would be nice if I don't even like them anyway

I don't mind so much; it gave me time to get a leg up on my homework and Monday's edition of the paper. I've got to email Ms. Charbonnot to let her know that I'm going to get there much earlier than usual tomorrow.

I'd decided that I was going to volunteer for the Red Cross this summer. It just seems like there's so much that's still not done in the area after Katrina, and I know a whole bunch of families who are still struggling to make ends meet, to find a more permanent place to live, etc. So with that in mind, I went ahead and gathered a list of places in Louisiana that have chapters that you can volunteer in.

  • The Red Cross always needs volunteers, no matter what time of year it is. The Baton Rouge chapter desperately needs more members.

  • You could also volunteer to get donates for Homes for Our Troops, a non-profit organization that assists soldiers and others who have given selflessly for the country and have come back with the more serious injuries. This group raises donations -- in the form of money, labor, or building supplies -- to provide a home with handicapped accessibility for those soldiers who cannot pay for it themselves. And shouldn't, all things considered. The homes are given at no charge to the troop and his family.

  • Volunteers of America helps a wide variety of people who need help. Including: at-risk youth, the elderly who need help, former prisoners, the homeless, people with disabilities, and recovering addicts. This group is a religious group, and should be worked with if you are tolerant to other's religious leanings.

  • You can Adopt-A-Minefield, as well as volunteer, to help rid landmines. I really suggest the video on the main page. It's really heart-wrenching and informative. I didn't know that every 30 minutes, someone is maimed or killed by a landmine.

  • Big Brothers, Big Sisters is always on the look-out for Big Brothers and Sisters. If you're not sure exactly what they do, it's simple. You become a mentor for a child who might otherwise be alone. Not only will you be helping to slow down crime, but you'll create memories with the person you're mentoring, enriching both of their lives.

  • The One Campaign is focused on eradicating poverty and by conquering poverty, other things will fall like hunger, AIDS and other diseases. You might have seen the commercials on tv; there's a lot of celebrities involved in this one.

  • Meals on Wheels prepares and distributes meals to the elderly.

  • UNICEF is committed to helping children in all aspects of their lives.

  • WAND (or Women's Action for New Directions) is devoted to issues important and oftentimes specific to women; for example: promoting alternatives to military action, cleaning up the effects of nuclear weapons production (the group was originally found as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament), and preventing violence against women. There is a specific chapter for high school and college-aged students.

Of course, these aren't all of the non-profits and non-partisans in Louisana. These were just the few higher profile, easy to get to from Apple Creek ones that I could find. If anyone wants it, I can compile a list of charities you could donate to, instead of volunteering.

I went to bed early last night, since my head was throbbing, and when I woke up, there's the project. I used to have a Livejournal a while ago, but I was terrified the cheerleaders would got tired of keeping it.

Oh, my name is Anne Elliott. I'm a Junior this year. I think it's a terrible shame that for this project someone had to threaten the school, and I hope that it helps soothe the administration's fears. I can't imagine how hurt someone would have to be to threaten something like that. I'm getting off tangent; I sometimes do that when I'm nervous. Sorry.

I really like my classes this semester. There's a lot of writing in it, which makes me very happy. American History, Journalism, Creative Writing, and Honors English. I spend my days and nights buried in words. I know a lot of people don't like writing, but I love it. It's the one place that I can really be myself, I guess. Gosh, I really don't know what to say about myself. I'm going to be SO terrible at job interviews. And then I'll never get away from papa and out of App

I used to be a cheerleader, but then mama died, and things sort of got rough around the house and we lost the house and dad's been spending money like it's -- I can't write that

I got my registration for the Young Journalism Development Program. They hold a Journalism Camp every year, and this year's is at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. I'll be gone from June 23-27th. It's going to be fantastic. There's going to be all sorts of reporters there, including from The Times! And it'll really help me with the editing of the paper, too. Lots of desktop publishing bits. Early registration was pretty cheap inexpensive, too.

What do YOU have going on this summer?

But Anne, with an elegance of mind and sweetness
of character, which must have placed her high with any people
of real understanding, was nobody with either father or sister;
her word had no weight, her convenience was always to give way--
she was only Anne. )
